Where Have All the Shamrock Shakes Gone?
There's no better way to celebrate St. Patrick's Day than with a smooth, thick, green Shamrock Shake from McDonald's. Sadly, few have actually been able to find the rare minty shake on the menu since the mid-1980s (unless you go to Ireland). Occasionally a rumor will circulate that an obscure McDonald's in the heartland has the shake in stock. Diehard fans rush out with coolers in hand to stock up until the next release. But they arrive only to find the report to be a vicious rumor. There is no shake and there hasn't been for a very long time.
We just wish we could play the game where we confound the McDonald's cashiers by ordering one of our all time favorite desserts: Chocolate Shake swirled with Shamrock Shake. Special permission needs to be granted by the supervisors and there is usually a lot of confusion. But when that shake arrives, it tastes so good.
If you would like to make your own green shake, Foodgeeks.com has the recipe.

This is the first year since I am not sure when - probably the first year they came out - that I could not find a Shamrock Shake near me (Marin County, CA). I always make an annual pilgrimage on St Patrick's Day to McDonald's to have my first Shamrock Shake of the year. I even got my vegetarian husband to make the trip with me and he is looks forward to the trip now too. Believe me, this is the only time of year he can be seen near a McDonalds. We even checked all the McDonald's we could find on our way to the SF Airport. Last year was a bonanza - almost all the locations in Marin had them. The year before was hard to find but there was at least one store that did. One year I actually had one before St Patrick's day (I just couldn't wait) and when I came back to the same location on St Patrick's Day with my husband, confident about getting another one, they had already run out. I guess I need to start calling at the beginning of March instead of starting to look for them on St Patrick's Day. I appreciate the recipe provided on this web site - but for me it is just not the same thing to make my own. Everyone should send a not to McDonalds to see if we can get a Shamrock Shake Locator on their website: http://www.mcdonalds.com/app_controller.custsat.custsat_form_marketing.html.
